Daniel Harris Dewey.–The subject of this sketch was born Berlin, Vermont, November 8th, 1801. The eldest of fourteen children of Israel Dewey, who was Post Master for 25 years, of Berlin, Vermont. He was married November 14, 1827, to Miss Evalina Stowe, the daughter of Samuel Stowe.
Dr. Dewey came to Canton, where he now resides, in April, 1835. Opened a shop in 1841, where he still continues business, on the corner of Jones and White streets. Mr. Dewey was noted for his superiority as a machinist; work was brought from far and near. He is the manufacturer of the celebrated Dewey scales; has been making them since 1841, and at this time is manufactuing them with his late improvement, patented January 25th, 1870—they being far superior to any scale now in use.
Dr. D. and wife are both still living; both ply their vocation as of yore, respected by their neighbors and friends.
He has been elected several times to civil offices in Canton; and in 1850 was one of the Board who ordered the first sidewalk to be laid around the Public Square.
